HIP HOP REPORT
Episode 13: Chris Brown, Lloyd, & Kirk Franklin

Coming up on this episode of the hip hop report….Teen Idol Chris Brown prepares for his forthcoming CD Exclusive and is set to hit the big screen for the holidays. Hip Hop singer Lloyd finally gets his just due and Kirk Franklin talks about balancing hip hop and gospel. All that coming up next on the hip hop report.

Teen sensation Chris Brown made quite an impression with his breakout single “Run It.” It hit number on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, took over the airwaves and catapulted his debut album “Young Love” to triple platinum status. Not bad for a 16 year old out of Tappahannock,Virginia. Now at 18 he’s back in the studio puttin’ in work on his sophomore album titled Exclusive. Reportedly he’s written several songs on the forthcoming effort and touches on mature topics of a sexual nature. Brown says although he has a couple edgy cuts on the album, he’s staying true to his young fan base. In addition to flexing his singing skills, Chris is pretty nice on the toes as well. He tells us why he chooses to incorporate both into his act:

CHRIS BROWN quote: “…I believed… I seen other artist doing it… so thought if they can do it I can do it…I believed in my talent as well as trying to be an artist so when I heard running for the first time I said, I am going to show case my dancing…”

Chris Brown made his big screen debut in the hit film Stomp The Yard which came in at #1 its opening weekend, grossing 22 million. It doesn’t stop there for the young star he’s set to star in two upcoming movies, one being, the holiday film This Christmas starring Regina King, David Banner and Idris Alba and Chris show’s off his skills on the court in the basketball flick Phenom. Chris Brown’s new CD Exclusive is due out this September.

Another star on the rise is Lloyd. The hip hop singer made his debut in the R&B group N-Toon but eventually went solo after that project went practically unnoticed. He made some noise with his first CD Southside in 2004 and pumped up the volume on his second joint Street Love that spawn the hit single “You” featuring Lil Wayne and his latest joint Get It Shawty. Lets take a look at the video:

(Music Video: Lloyd “GIT IT SHAWTY”)

Over the past decade, Holy Hip Hopper Kirk Franklin has boldly gone where no gospel artist has gone before…he’s successfully bridge gospel and hip hop music together despite being criticized by his folks in the gospel community. Since his debut in 1993, he’s had a string of platinum #1 albums and 5 Grammy’s to grace his mantle piece. Kirk explains to us the importance of balancing the 2 music genre’s:

KIRK FRANKLIN: “Since I do Christian music, I want to make sure nothing gets past the message from the life style I’m trying to live the best I know how to live.”

Franklin is currently working on a film titled Church Boy which is an autobiographical story based on his life. In addition to all that…he owns and operates his own entertainment company Fo Yo Soul which includes a record label, production company, ad agency and youth ministry.
