HIP HOP REPORT
Episode 21: BABY BASH, MACK 10, & SEAN KINGSTON

Coming up on this episode of the Hip Hop Report: Latin rap star Baby Bash readies a new album…Inglewood’s own Mack 10 is still Hoo Bangin and Raggae rap singer Sean Kingston looks to a bright future. All that and more coming up next on the Hip Hop Report.

Rapper Baby Bash says the only thing Latin about his music is himself. He describes his style, as a ā€œfusion of everythingā€ from R&B, rap, Latin and rock and it seems to be working! The Vallejo, California native considers himself just an urban kid and that he never really set out to be a rapper. So how did he end up rappin?

BABY BASH: ā€œI started rapping in College. I was playing basketball in College in the Bay. I am a product of Mac Dre and E-40 actually. I messing around in the studio around 7 or 8 years ago. I was never really trying to be a rapper to tell you the truth I was just at the studio messing around and clown and have fun. I was just hanging aroundthe studio and people started asking me my opinion more and more. So I said let me write my own songs I discovered I had the talent of arranging and writing hooks and staying on point and saying some cool little words. Next thing you know a little record deal went down.ā€

Baby Bash has recorded 4 albums. In 2001, he debuted with Savage Dreams that was released independently under the name Baby Beesch and in 2003, he dropped his first major label release titled The Smokin Nephew and Super Saucey in 2005. Now he’s back with his self titled album Baby Bash and he’s invited a few of his good friends along. Akon, Lil Jon and T-Pain are just a few of the raps stars making an appearance on the new joint. Bash explains how it feels to work with today’s chart toppin’ rap stars:

BABY BASH: ā€œYeah it’s cool. The album I did before I worked with Akon and his name was Mr. Akon, I did a song called Baby I’m Back with him. It was so funny, I knew he felt my style and I felt his style. Before he got big I sensed he was going to be big. I knew it got to do some songs with him. He is tight. And after that he just blew up. And he’s a good person down to earth person.

ā€œI met Lil John in Atlanta and he’s actually said, ā€˜I like your style, your not to hard, and you’re not a corney cat your right down a cool lane.’ So he sent me the beat for Cyclone and T-Pain just so happen to be in the studio and we didn’t hook it up or anything. We were at the studio at the Hit Factory in Miami. He came in listen and started going off and started rapping and just said jump on.ā€

And how does Bash managed to stay down to earth?

BABY BASH: ā€œI consider myself too regular. I don’t know if I am humble. I stay down to earth and grounded. Because I’ve slept on may floor and many couches. I’ve been hungry for while. I don’t think just because I have a talent in writing music I don’t think I am above everyone else. But I think in my personality people feel that. In my music people feel that. I am not some high profile celebrity cause I’m not trying to bring all that attention. I will write you some cool music. I think people feel my character through my music in my character. I don’t know if that makes sense but I just use common sense and logic.ā€

Inglewood California rapper, Mack 10 is about to drop a new solo album titled Soft White, which he says is raw and uncut ā€œMack 10ā€. The West Coast rapper has been laying low for a minute and we found out what he’s up to:

MACK 10: ā€œRight now I’m just concentrating on Hoo Bangin and my new album – CURRENT PROJECTS – Soft White and Beach cruiser.ā€

10 came hard with his 1995 self-titled debut that featured the West Coast hit ā€œFoe Lifeā€. The following year he joined Ice Cube and WC in forming West Side Connection, out of frustration from the whole East Coast West Coast rivalry situation. After recording 2 albums in 7 years, Mack 10 left West Side Connection and went out on his own. We asked Mack 1-0 does he see a reunion with Cube and Dub C anywhere in the future:

MACK 10: ā€œI don’t know I’m just focused on Soft White and Beach cruiser.ā€

Despite career ups and downs most artists face, Mack 10 keeps a positive outlook on his 10 plus years in the game:

MACK 10: ā€œI’m Blessed and still getting big Checks.ā€

The future wasn’t always bright for 17-year old Raggae pop star Sean Kingston. At 11, he had a run in with the law and soon after his mom and sister was incarcerated. After a bout with jail and homelessness, the young teen focused on his singing and song writing abilities and turned his life around. He persistently hit up producer JR Rotem on myspace until the hit maker took notice and signed Kingston to his label. The raggae rap singer penned all clean songs on his self-titled debut and the future is looking pretty bright with his single ā€œBeautiful Girlsā€ topping the charts at #1!
