Episode 22: CYPRESS HILL, CHAMILLIONAIRE, & LIL ROMEO

Coming up on this episode of the Hip Hop Report…B-Real squashes the rumor of a Cypress Hill break up….Lil Romeo purchases Rap Snacks, Inc. and Chamillionaire says no to the “N” word on his new album Ultimate Victory. All that and more coming up next on the Hip Hop Report.

Cypress Hill released their self-titled debut in 1991 setting the stage for Latin rap artists. That album went multi-platinum making them the first Latin rap group to achieve such record sales. In 93, they released their second project Black Sunday that debuted at #1 on Billboards top 200 albums chart. B-Real. DJ Muggs and Sen Dogg formed Cypress Hill nearly 2 decades ago with Bobo joining the group in ‘94. Each member has over the years, ventured outside of the group to pursue their own projects sparking speculation of a break up. B-Real addresses such rumors:

B-REAL of CYPRESS HILL: “This will be the 8th record for Cypress as far as albums go studio albums we have a couple of Mix tapes and a Spanish and what not. There were a lot of rumors of us breaking up but we never broke up we just went on hiatus to do all our on individual projects and what not. Cause we love touring, we love performing the songs for people, and we love recording as Cypress Hill so you know. Sometimes when you take a little bit of a layoff people take it as breakup or something like that and it was definitely not what it was”

In addition to putting in work on the forthcoming Cypress Hill joint, B-Real is also in the studio working on his debut solo joint tentatively titled Smoke and Mirrors. He explains how it feels to record solo:

B-REAL of CYPRESS HILL: “It Feels good. I mean you know for me doing music period always feels good. That’s the passion. So doing a solo record being able pretty much you know do what you want to do creatively that might not fit in your existing situation. You know that’s always cool. Cause I can always get that creativity out and come back to Cypress with a clear head and do what we do as a unit.”

B-Real’s solo debut Smoke and Mirrors is slated to drop early 2008 and the new Cypress Hill album is scheduled for summer 2008. THIS IS OPTIONAL (Lets take it back with a little Cypress Hill. )

“Like father, like son” best describes Percy “Master P” Miller and his son Romeo Miller. Both are rappers, both play basketball and yes, both are successful entrepreneurs. Romeo has recently purchased Rap Snacks, Inc. A popular potato chip brand, dubbed “The official snack of hip hop.” The snacks that garner pictures of famous rappers on its bag have sold millions since it was founded in 1994. Romeo has also joined with his pops, Master P in taking a stand against degrading lyrics by starting a label called “Take A Stand” records that will release all clean material. The first release is an album titled Hip Hop History that features songs with Silk The Shocker and Chamillionaire.

Speakin of keeping it clean….Grammy award winning rapper Chamillionaire, says you won’t hear him using the “N” word or any curse words on his new album “Ultimate Victory”. The Houston rhyme sayer says his efforts often went unnoticed and was sometimes criticized by the press and others. So how does he deal with such challenges?

CHAMILLIONAIRE: “When I first came out…I was so mad. I was opening magazines and they were staying stuff about me. Don’t they know I got a purpose? I’m not cursing, smoking, drinking, and killing everybody on these records. And they are trying to bash me. I was so mad at them. Then again if they hadn’t had done that I wouldn’t as worked as hard as I did to get to were I am at. I was mad every day. I was waking up everyday like Naw I’m going to show them… you know what I mean. And I did show them…I’m hold this grammy…you know. Hat’s off to them too”

Chamillionaire’s new album Ultimate Victory features guest appearances by UGK, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne and Slick Rick Amongst others and is available now. Lets check out the first single from that joint called Hip Hop Police featuring the legendary Slick Rick.
